Delivery of affordable high quality health care service is a complex problem that can be related to many factors, such as: regulatory, political, technical and technological. Additionally, the rapid changes in the external environment surroundings complicates health care delivery. Therefore, in order to achieve the goal of delivering high quality health care is necessary to innovate the way health care is being delivered. As a result of this, health care providers must find innovative and simple ways that make use of methodologies, techniques, and technologies within and outside health care for health care delivery. These interventions can assist in the prevention of disabilities or deaths, and, in the end, decrease the direct and indirect costs of health care delivery. The Master of Science in Health Care Informatics provide the link between health care and information technology in order to form competencies that will be needed on the process of innovating health care delivery. In other words, the Masters of Science in Health Care informatics provide the appropriate competencies for re-engineering health care delivery.
One of my main goals during this Master degree was to obtain the initial knowledge, competencies and technical skills to merge health care and engineering in order to re-engineer health care delivery. As a Physician, I have always thought that health care delivery can be improved by applying techniques and technology from information technology. As a Computer Engineer, I have found that information technology provides a wide array of methodologies, processes, techniques, and technology that can be applied to improve health care delivery. Therefore, it was important for me to learn how information technology can be safely applied and how can this benefits can be delivered to a wider population of patients. The Masters of Science in Health Care Informatics has provided me with the necessary competencies to create sustainable innovative solutions to promote the delivery of high quality health care that preserve and protect the quality of life of the patients. It is my intention to apply this knowledge over the next years into Information Technology projects that are related to health care.
